In seinem 1984 veröffentlichten Essay “Postmodernism, or the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism“ vertritt Fredric Jameson die Ansicht, daß die „derealization of the whole surrounding world of everyday reality“ die Wahrnehmung der historisch determinierten Konditionen unseres gegenwärtigen Lebens verstellt. Jameson entwirft die Idee einer „aesthetic of cognitive mapping … [für einen Durchbruch] to some as yet unimaginable new mode of representing, in which we may again begin to grasp our positioning as individual and collective subjects and regain a capacity to act and struggle which is at present neutralized by our spatial as well as our social confusion“.
Jameson‘s Idee einer “kognitiven Landkarte“ bildet die Grundlage für die formale und inhaltliche  Umsetzung eines interdisziplinären Kunstprojekts, das geophysikalische Sachverhalte mit den Merkmalen heutiger Diskurshoheiten in Beziehung setzt. Das im Frühjahr 2005 abgeschlossene Projekt untersucht die Frage nach der Kreation von Sinnzusammenhängen unter Bedingungen, die Jameson als „the concrete character of the social life of the so-called advanced countries“ beschreibt, und die er definiert als „a world saturated with messages and information, whose intricate commodity network may be seen as the very prototype of a system of signs“.
